Fishguard under16s went into their fourth game of the season, still looking for their first win, against a good Milford side thats only lost once this season. It was Milford who started the best, with their centres running some good lines and out pacing our drifting defence to score in the corner 5 - 0. It was the same move that caught us out again 10 - 0. Fishguard started putting some phases together off the restart and worked our way up the pitch, only to lose it on their 5 meter line. Not giving up when Milford tried to clear their line, we charged down the kick, and the first to react was our nippy scrum half, Aled James, to pounce on the ball to score our 1st try, 10 - 5. The Fishguard pack went straight back up the field, putting pressure on the Milford pack who tried to slow down any Fishguard ball, only for the ref to be on hand to penalise Milford for hands in the ruck, with Jac Evans stepping up to slot over the penalty 10 - 8. The game started to hot up with Milford not getting all their own way, but with the Milford backs a bit sharper than ours, they ran in a couple more tries to lead half time 24 - 8
The second half started much like the first with Milford on top, and it was their forwards crashing over for a try this time and adding the conversion to lead 31 - 8. With some harsh words off the coaches, we started playing well, only for an altercation to start up on the Milford 22, which held play up for a few minutes.
After some stern words off the ref and coaches the game was aloud to go on, and from the resulting penalty the Fishguard prop Sam Harries crashed over the line to make it 31 -13. The remaining 20 minutes was the Callum Ford show, with the prop crossing the try line 3 times with some outstanding runs, with the Milford pack having no answer to his natural strength. With the score poised at 31 - 28, Fishguard were camped on the Milford line, with the ref awarding Fishguard a penalty for off side at the ruck, we went for the win with the quick tap. The ball was quickly off loaded to Callum, only for the ref to penalise us for crossing. This gave Milford the chance to clear their line and put the ball off the field. The ref blew up for full time. This was a really good game to watch against a good Milford side. The boys really stood up in the second half and didn't let the bully boy tactics affect their game. Both sets of coaches were happy with the performance but Fishguard should have won it in the end. Well done boys, every one of you in our squad of 19 that day!
