1st XV v St Clears
Seagulls 15 St Clears 8
Fishguard played some good rugby against St Clears to claim theor second successive Saturday win, a result that pleased player/coach Alan Phillips because it shows the Seagulls are finally on the right track after a lot of hard work.
A Fishguard victory meant the Saints are now just a point ahead of them in the table and one of the plus points for the home side was Graham Davies was able to play and lend his considerable experience and drive to the cause. He started at number eight and finished at scrum half, and scored the onlt try of a tight first period when he ploughed through after a controlled take and drive.
There were uncontested scrums from the start as St Clears were unable to field a recognised front row, which robbed the match of some intensity and the Seagulls might have had further points with the wind in their favour, but poor handling at key times meant that other chances went begging.
St Clears opened the second half scoring with a Martin Thomas penalty, but Fishguard stamped their authority up front with a clean take on the ten metre line and a drive of such ferocity that they marched the Saints back 35 metres before it was illegally pulled down. Referee Martin Williams awarded the Seagulls a penalty try which Alun George converted.
St Clears responded almost immediatley with a good from centre Matthew Howells, but they were unable to breach the tight home defence again and the Seagulls had the final word when Rhodri Thomas slotted a late penalty to secure the spoils.
